Can you be like the ancient sages who led the simple and unadorned life but never felt ashamed or bitter for it?

¡¡¡¡ Maybe you are very pleased with yourself, but at the same time, do you find your ignorance needing transformed and shallowness needing enriched urgently? Do you find your place in the universe when taking great pride in the worldly fame or wealth? Can you distinguish your level in that special realm or in the ideological sphere? Do you think about all these above?

¡¡¡¡ Maybe you will be intoxicated with self-satisfaction, but do you know the eternal dialectics between gain and loss? Do you know the truth that to gain is to lose, and to lose the gain is the true gain? Do you only persist in the flashy fame or petty profit but not know where you are from and where to go at all? Can you deserve to be called the wiser, being worthy of reveling?

¡¡¡¡ Maybe you are self-appreciated, but can you see your true nature?

¡¡¡¡ Maybe you deceive others as well as yourself, but do you know all things will become empty, and nothing but the sins will follow you once you've died? Can you comprehend the profound mysterious principles in it?

¡¡¡¡ Maybe you are self-important, but do you know there are skies beyond the skies, and there are covered talents surpassing the talents? Are you the saint or the celestial beings?

¡¡¡¡ Maybe you once abandoned yourself to despair, or deeply felt yourself inferior, but all these will be of no importance for if you can comprehend the value of your life, and find the hope that the mysterious Gods lay on you, becoming excited over it, keep up your spirit, and do all you can to pursue a kind of lofty good, then, the promising desire will prompt you to face any challenge full of hardships and setbacks fearlessly, striding ahead, which means your spirit will be regenerated and the new life will begin.

¡¡¡¡ Perhaps you never live as the above or only sometimes as the above, but you should introspect anyway. The ancients said: "It'll be rare and commendable for us to be afraid that the new start can't be up to standard and the evils can't be eradicated completely." To introspect critically to return to the original good of nature is to go deep to the principle and study it endlessly. If you can't comprehend it, the new start will not be able to reach the extremely high level and the perfect degree; the same, you must understand the principle of repenting of the evils, or else, the hidden damage of the evil will be left.

The killing includes that illegally kill the innocent persons, kill the people or the beings, advise others to kill, kill for hate, and commit suicide; kill and wound the sentiment beings; entangle birds or beasts with cages, networks or covers; hunt with bows and arrows, swords and spears; and even fish. The ancient said: "Fishing is really interesting, but the small fishhook hangs the power of life and death". It also includes that dig the soil presumptuously, destroy the mountains and rivers, drain the pond, set fire on the ground, splash the hot water at random, look for the nests to destroy, beat the six domestic animals (the pig, ox, goat, horse, fowl and dog) rashly, and dig out the hibernating animals to make them die. You may not tell others that you can help them to see the true celestial beings, or tell them you can cure some disease, and you can't treat until the family member of the patient comes to invite you; moreover, you shouldn't accept the courtesy of others rashly, and on this and like occasions, you should think that your are not worthy to be treated with courtesy because of lack of ability, and your name doesn't match to the reality; you shouldn't write the big characters for others carelessly, or show off your collection of books. ¡¡¡¡ When introspecting critically to return to the original good of nature, you need to abstain from luxury, namely you shouldn't live high. You shouldn't use the gold or jade tableware, live in the house with many doors or being magnificent, sleep in the big and spacious bed with gorgeous bedding. The ancients also advocated "The clothes for four seasons shouldn't be over three suits"; otherwise, you'll be thought as the extravagant. And "you should pay attention to thrift, follow the example of the sages, and lead a very simple life". Therefore, the ancients thought "The luxury will reduce happiness while the frugality can help us cultivate virtues".

When you become angry, the blood will arise and both your soul and spirit will be shocked, so every one of us should think the future trouble and the reason before getting angry. The fury or the flaring up will cause that the anger rises to your head; boiling with rage or glaring at others will do harm to your spirit and livers; and betraying your angry shows you are short of self-cultivation. Someone thinks that "Don't hate others is equal to abiding by the commandment, and keep quiet is equal to leaving home to become monk or nun", which is the best motto to help us abstain from anger.

You shouldn't inquire about the confidential affairs of the military or the state, practice divination, abduct women or children, write letter to humiliate others, or backbite. Talk about something of others is bad, and something of yours is good, or which food of others is delicious, and which is bad; discuss right and wrong, clamor loudly in public; make frivolous remarks about others; sow discord; publicize the secrets of others; and take delight in speaking ill of others, etc. All these above belong to the things that can't be spoken because they're not in conformity with the proprieties. In addition, you shouldn't limit others in purpose, or make comments about various kinds of natural disasters.

¡¡¡¡ Then, what's the meaning of that "Don't listen to it if it's not in conformity with the proprieties"? It means that anything can't be seen or spoken for it's not in conformity with the proprieties shouldn't be listened to.

¡¡¡¡ Then, what's the meaning of that "Don't do it if it's not in conformity with the proprieties"? It means not to act rashly. You shouldn't gad about, namely to move about restlessly and with little purpose; or follow the common customs to attend the funeral procession but should mourn silently and secretly when this kind of things happen; or collude with others; or only regard the clan as relative, or be too narrow-minded but should regard people all over the world as your siblings; or cast dirt into the wells or rivers to pollute the water; or worship the ghosts or deities that you shouldn't worship for the Confucian said: "If you offer the sacrifice to the ghosts whose offering shouldn't be presented by you, you fawn on them"; or pray for blessing after doing the evil deeds; or take things of others to make a gift of it; or write the deed for others rashly; or buy or sell the land or house for others; or enjoy the prank; or drive without cause or reason, or get together for nothing, eating and drinking too much, etc.

¡¡¡¡ When introspecting critically to return to the original good of nature, you should be with the great wisdom and courage, but what are the great wisdom and courage? Living in the material world with many evils and few kindnesses, and being in the adversity, you shouldn't be sad or unhappy but should be self-confident to make unremitting efforts to improve yourself, and be self-respect to lead a clean life. Even if being infringed on or slandered by others, you shouldn't become depressed or timid but should firmly believe the principle that "Each practicer must be protected by the doctrine-protect masters naturally since he (she) practices Tao"

¡¡¡¡ When introspecting critically to return to the original good of nature, you should be superior in wisdom and behavior. What's to be superior in wisdom and behavior? It means to "Be away from the evil place, and don't be greedy for fame or fortune". Avoid the evil person, as you know the good bird often choose the good tree to perch.

¡¡¡¡ When introspecting critically to return to the original good of nature, you should be extremely open-minded and magnanimous. When being abused, only listen instead of answering back. Return good for evil, and don't complain or return evil for evil. You should keep indifferent to both the slander and the praise; accept, tolerate, and dissolve the censures and slanders with smile. In a word, if you face anything mercifully, your mind will be as open as the sea and sky, and you will have boundless beneficence. A thousand-mile journey is started by the first step, and it'll be not easy for you to put the above principles into practice if you haven't purified your mind over a long period of time, but it's also the touchstone to distinguish the heroes from the commonplace.

You should set up the lofty aspirations and keep them firm and steadfast often, being never unworthy of the hope of the great masters. You should observe the commandment strictly, and regard the heart fast as the highest realm of fast.

¡¡¡¡ What's the heart fast? It means to empty the brain, getting rid of all desires; clean the spirit, making your heart as pure as a lily, remove the filth; and dispel the worries, clearing up the wishful thinking. Only after you've been light-hearted, can you be absorbed in Tao; and only without addictions or desires, can you be happy to practice Tao; and only without sins or worries, can you correspond to Tao. If you can practice Tao heart and soul, you will follow the heart fast. People achieving the highest level practice the heart fast, and it's the highest realm of fast, and the true skills. Somebody says that "It'll benefit you nothing even you worship on bended knees for one hundred times if your heart is not pure; but it'll do you great favor even you only burn one joss stick if you're quite pious", which shows the absolute purity and sincerity is the heart fast.

¡¡¡¡ To return to the original good of nature is to take compassion on and love all the sentiment beings. Even burning one joss stick to make the vow, you should pray for all humanity, wishing for world peace and prosperity instead of blessing yourself only. This shows that the great vow is selfless.

¡¡¡¡ Therefore, we can see that to introspect critically to return to the original good of nature is to examine yourself three times every day like the ancient, to inspect yourself carefully every day, cleanse the heart, see your true nature, clear away the dust and dirt contaminating at any time, practice Tao heart and soul, accumulate merits piously, and do more good works to change the evil causes. "Cause produces effect, and effect presupposes the cause"; "Your present situation is decided by your past behavior, and your future will be decided by your present behavior"; "Good will be rewarded with good, and evil with evil"; "Do the least good in spite of the least, and don't do the least evil for it's least"; "If you can observe the commandment, or remove the bad to follow the good after violating it on time, you'll be able to change your future"; "Even you once did the evil, if you can repent of them and mend your ways in time, and create no evil but only do the good works for a long period of time, you'll be able to change the causes of evils and achieve the spiritual state of the immoral", which means God helps the man of virtue change disasters into fortunes. But only after you've become conscious, cultivated virtues and practiced, been diligent, endured hardships, and sought the way of longevity day and night, can you be able to practice Tao, seek the great Tao and practice it successfully.

Therefore, we can only give you some clues, through which we hope you can go ahead, and feel the shock in your heart of hearts, thus making you wish to know yourself, to know the life and the origin of nature. Then, what we do here will be successful.

¡¡¡¡ We show here is not the final conclusion but only a reference, for it'll be a kind of tragedy and sadness if our behaviors and thoughts fall into a set pattern. Hence, the predecessors told us: "All composed things are like a dream, a phantom, a drop of dew, a flash of lightning. That is how to meditate on them, that is how to observe them". The inexhaustible vigor arises from a quiet, peaceable, simple, gentle and empty heart, however, only after seeing clearly yourself as well as the world can you enter into such state¡­

¡¡¡¡ Xin sheng yu wu si yu wu,

¡¡¡¡ En li sheng sha hai cang en,

¡¡¡¡ Each of us has some unusual experience in the life, but only a very few think about what the unusual mean, and what the usual mean. This kind of rumination is called "self-examination" or "introspection".

¡¡¡¡ The world runs according to its law in spite of our carelessness, and all run in spite of our carelessness.

¡¡¡¡ But who can tell what all these mean to us?

¡¡¡¡ The existence of humanity is very short, but heaven and earth is eternal. Who is the real master? The answer goes without saying.

¡¡¡¡ It's impossible for us to think about, or to understand so many things in our lives, which is caused by our carelessness, our self-confidence, our pride of place, or the lack of real courage?

¡¡¡¡ The eternal is still eternal, and the short is still short, and all things go as if they never happened.

¡¡¡¡ Who can really prove the relations between himself and the world, himself and nature, or himself and heaven and earth?

¡¡¡¡ Do you really understand yourself?

¡¡¡¡ Maybe we'll be very busy to satisfy our endless desires, or even sacrifice our lives in the busyness to satisfy our desires! But who can cherish the thoughts flashing at the little leisure?

¡¡¡¡ In life, so many things need us to do, such as, to grow up, to read, to love, to marry, to bear children, to support our parents, and to bring up children, even to keep busy on the run for his (or her) living. We need to raise our family, and to be busy for the living of ourselves and many other things besides living.

¡¡¡¡ All these above are worth it, but are they the whole life?

¡¡¡¡ In the stillness of the night when being relieved of the fatigue, you can look for the stars in the sky (for we've already been away from nature), unload many heavy mental burdens, free from all the moods, and try to feel all the things that still run despite of being neglected by us. Do you feel them, do you hear them, or understand their real meaning?

¡¡¡¡ One who really understands the relations between humanity and nature is great!

¡¡¡¡ One who really knows him himself is great!

¡¡¡¡ Where am I from and where am I to go? What do the physical bodies mean to us, and what do the living lives mean to us?

¡¡¡¡ In the eyes of heaven and earth and nature, there is no the concept of science, and science is only the summary that humanity gives to heaven and earth, nature and the ripe concepts known by them no matter these concepts are permanent or transient.

¡¡¡¡ In the realm through which humanity explores the nature of life, there shouldn't be the concept of science, for it'll bind our spirits.

¡¡¡¡ If we're keeping busy in the lifetime, it'll be a kind of sadness for we don't know what we live for; if we're only carefree and leisure, it'll also be a kind of sadness for we haven't really lived!

¡¡¡¡ Heaven and earth is inexorable, and in the eyes of the heaven and earth, there is no difference between the great and the petty, the noble and the lowly, the success and the failure, the rich and the poor, as well as the life and the death. And all the differences only come from the subjective imagination of humanity?

¡¡¡¡ Among all things, heaven and earth is the most impartial, for all we've done will be answered!

¡¡¡¡ What we've conquered is nature or ourselves?

¡¡¡¡ What we've lost is nature or ourselves?

¡¡¡¡ We needn't to seek the answers, for all of them are seen by heaven and earth, and recorded by the fleeting time.

¡¡¡¡ We never go towards only one direction in the past, present or future, and we'll find the awaiting eyes watching us with concerns when we turn around suddenly by accident.

¡¡¡¡ All the concepts are not the end of our thoughts but only a kind of assumption given under the particular circumstance.

¡¡¡¡ Our busyness is worth it, as you know:

¡¡¡¡ When being a baby, we've understood the relations between falsehood and reality, existence and nonexistence, light and dark, as well as heaven and earth.

¡¡¡¡ When being a child, we've understood the relations between the true and the false, the good and the kind, the big and the small, as well as the parents and the child.

¡¡¡¡ When being a teenager, we've understood the relations between beauty and ugliness, good and bad, gain and loss, as well as hope and disappointment.

¡¡¡¡ When being an adult, we've understood the relations between Yin and Yang, man and woman, life and death, as well as essence and appearance.

¡¡¡¡ When being a parent, we've understood the relations between responsibility and inevitability, sadness and free, success and failure, busyness and leisure, children and us, as well as enterprising and introspection.

¡¡¡¡ When being died, we'll understand all the secrets between life and body, as well as life and heaven and earth.

¡¡¡¡ Everyone's fate can be changed since the heaven and earth gives us the equal opportunity.

¡¡¡¡ All the work is worth it, for they let us approach our origin continuously, they exhaust us, at the same time, make us understand the way of replenishing our life.

¡¡¡¡ Everyone's life is of value, and it's the journey we must go¡­

¡¡¡¡ Living with parents makes us know bestowing favors and repaying kindness.

¡¡¡¡ Living with husband (or wife) makes us clear about the marriage and the mutual aid.

¡¡¡¡ Living with children makes us understand sacrifice and remolding.

¡¡¡¡ Living with friends makes us learn to love without distinction and become composed.

¡¡¡¡ Living with ourselves makes us finish the mission and the return.

¡¡¡¡ The benevolence of the heaven is variant, so is its power and prestige. And all the things around us are only the good luck heaven and earth bestows on us.

¡¡¡¡ Humanity has to return for they have no way out, and the return of life lies in that we've clearly understood the true nature of life.

¡¡¡¡ In the eyes of heaven and earth, all things around us are only a kind of necessity, but only we ourselves are intoxicated in the gain and loss of the necessity.

¡¡¡¡ What we fear most is to face ourselves!

¡¡¡¡ Maybe we've committed, maybe we've been perplexed for a long period, or we'll remain perplexed or committed¡­

¡¡¡¡ However, we've known how to master our own fate, and we ourselves will take all the consequences.

¡¡¡¡ Maybe we'll never be great, but we'll be sensible, and sober, and master our own fate from this time on for we've had the courage to face ourselves.

¡¡¡¡ All burdens will be laid down, and will be loaded by these who will. Maybe there is no difference between the right way and the wrong way we go all along¡­

¡¡¡¡ There are many beautiful or ugly things which can make us move towards the enlightenment, they are the sun, the moon, the earth, the stars, the lotus flowers, the soil, the mountains, the water, the trees, the grass, the wind, the rain, the thunder, the lightning, the tears, the excitement or the blood¡­

¡¡¡¡ However, only we ourselves can grasp them¡­

¡¡¡¡ All the doors to future are not shut but await us to open, await the moment all the nightmare and fantasies are destroyed by the flash spirits accumulated for thousands of years, and await the moment when the false coverings weaved by ourselves the lifelong cover our spirits are completely torn, a new life which is beautiful or ugly, soft but strong, without any consciousness of defend but can be hurt by nothing is born, heaven and earth await him (or her) with tears for a long period, a pair of merciful palms will hold it, and the lotus flowers in the dream will bless and protect him (or her).

¡¡¡¡ Then, we'll have known ourselves, and known the meaning of life really, so we'll have already become great, and become immortal in a new world¡­

¡¡¡¡ We'll go on, maybe we'll be more painful, or we won't know our existence for we're so ordinary and that we will disappear from the memory of humanity or the memory of ourselves.

¡¡¡¡ However, we'll master our fate by ourselves and value our every second, and we'll be contented to get along with the ordinary people, being still but without any unreasonable demand, simple but not greedy. Let us only be the good child of our parents, the good partner of our wife (or husband), the good parent of our children, and the true warmth of our friends.

¡¡¡¡ What we can do for this world is only these above no matter we've been forgotten by the world.

¡¡¡¡ The one who really knows himself is great, he is great not for being understood or acknowledged but for the life has already embraced him, heaven and earth has already embraced him, and all the doors in the world have opened for him (or her)¡­

¡¡¡¡ Let the victor become the victor, the great become the great, and we'll be only ourselves. We'll be quiet, peaceable, simple, gentle and empty! What's nearest to us will be the pulse of heaven and earth, which will give us the endless motive force, make us know the eternal, lead us to know the true nature and to conquer the life.

¡¡¡¡ Our life will be eternal, in our eyes, there will be no difference between the beauty and the ugliness, the tall and the short, the fat and the thin, the good and the evil, all will be beautiful for their own beauty, and glitter for their own rays.

¡¡¡¡ All the lives are valuable for they're endowed by heaven and earth, all the sounds are sweet for they're sent forth during the run of heaven and earth, all the smells are fragrant for they're given out naturally, and all the feelings are natural for we won't distinguish them by hearts anymore¡­

¡¡¡¡ We'll go ahead, for we'll have to go; we'll return, for which will make us approach our origin.

¡¡¡¡ All the languages are empty and just the spiritual thinking can perceive. Only when you can't distinguish the good from the evil will you find the world is really the Pure Land

¡¡¡¡
